Session 2 - What is a good storyboard?

Firstly, what is a storyboard? A storyboard is a in a sense, a plot/story visualised with drawings, annotations, information, notes etc... Typically, these are done with 2 main boxes. One for the visual aspect and the other with dialogue. These 'shots' present what is happening in that scene and the dialog box helps explain it. If there is any audio, any speech that a character gives, camera setup, scene setup, (etc) will all be put into here.

So what actually makes a good storyboard? There are many aspects that must be considered in making sure that a storyboard achieves its targets. The most important would be to display information clearly so that the reader knows what they are doing (planning/shooting).  Some individual rules include avoiding flat staging, laying down grids, using foreground,mid-grounds and backgrounds to exaggerate depth.
